Hollywood Connections & Trivia
From Japan to the American West: The original Magnificent Seven was inspired by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954), relocating its story of defenders protecting a village to the American frontier.
Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson: Both later appeared in the World War II adventure The Great Escape (1963), also directed by John Sturges.
Yul Brynner: The original Chris Adams also starred in The King and I and played the robot Gunslinger in the science-fiction Western Westworld (1973).
James Coburn: The actor who played Britt later starred in Our Man Flint and Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
Lee Van Cleef: The star of the fourth film became a spaghetti-Western icon through Sergio Leone's For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
Iconic Western music: Elmer Bernstein's rousing theme for the 1960 film became one of cinema's most recognizable Western scores.
A modern connection: The story was reimagined in the 2016 film The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke; that remake is not included in this collection.
