Hollywood Connections & Trivia
A star-making Disney debut: Mary Poppins was Julie Andrews's feature-film debut. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance, launching a remarkable film career that also included The Sound of Music (1965).
More than one role: Dick Van Dyke plays the cheerful chimney sweep Bert and, under heavy makeup, the elderly bank executive Mr. Dawes Sr.—a fun surprise for viewers who know him from The Dick Van Dyke Show and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Disney history: The film blends live action with animation and features music by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, including the Oscar-winning song “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” The story originated in P. L. Travers's books; the journey to adapting them for film is dramatized in Saving Mr. Banks (2013), starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as Travers.
